Indigenous language education in Russia: current issues and challenges

Despite the high number of recognised Indigenous groups who are struggling to maintain their languages, cultures, and identities in Russia, there is little research done on matters cultural linguistic revitalisation. This study sought address this gap by exploring views two groups, Karelian Mari, development languages educational strategies protect revive languages. The relied in-depth one-on-one interviews with 20 participants, ten from each group. findings show that despite older generations’ relative proficiency interest respective motivation master them fading among younger populations. There also a lack opportunities learn including informal settings protections within federal legal system. participants identified three reasons for rapid decrease language speakers include assimilation differences rural urban development, globalisation. article concludes recommendations how revitalise Russia.
